A hot air balloon crash has killed of the balloon’s passengers.Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Lynn Lunsford told the AP that the balloon caught fire and crashed into a pasture near Lockhart, Texas, around 7:40 a.m.
Lunsford said the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating the crash. A spokesman at the scene said there had been “significant loss of life”.
KEYE news station in nearby Austin reports that first responders to the scene said it was “apparent that the reported fire was in the basket portion of the hot air balloon.”
The balloon crashed in an area of farmland and open fields of corn crops and cattle, and police held press back at a far distance from the dirt road where emergency vehicles gathered. A line of electrical towers loomed over the site, which was baking under 94F heat and mostly clear skies on Saturday.
