A major police operation is under way after a man rammed a police station car park claiming to have a bomb.According to local media reports in Sydney, the car was laden with gas bottles but they did not detonate. The man reportedly tried to set the gas bottles and himself on fire.
New South Wales police say no officers were injured in the attack and the driver has been taken into custody. Roads near Merrylands police station in western Sydney have been closed.
“The perimeter remains in place as a precaution while officers from the Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit attend and examine the vehicle,” police said in a statement. “The circumstances regarding the incident are in the early stages of being confirmed and no further details are available at this time.”
A reporter with the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper has quoted a police source as describing the incident as a “very deliberate attack” on the Merrylands station. ABC News says the man, who suffered burns during the attack, is known by police. Witnesses have reported a strong burning smell.
