Fans can expect some surprises on the cobbles when they are treated to an extra dose of Weatherfield action
Coronation Street will finally go to six episodes a week this autumn – with plenty of exciting new storylines just around the corner.
The extra does of Weatherfield action will herald the emergence of new characters, streets and businesses.
Show boss Kate Oates made the announcement while revealing what is in store for viewers of the ITV soap.
“There has to be loads of story going on as we go to six episodes in autumn – there will be lots of different character groups and tones of stories,” she told The Sun Online.
“The idea is that by the time we come to the six episodes, we will have loads going on and lots for the audience to talk about – the whole fabric will be very rich. We have a start date in the ether but it’s not completely confirmed yet.”
Bosses at ITV have embarked on an ambitious extension of the set for the show in Media City, Salford, Greater Manchester.
A police station, a school and a court have already been promised, but now it appears more businesses will be moving into Weatherfield with a new business on a new road – Kitchener St.
Kate added: “What I’m excited about is the lot extension – it will be a cool Truman Show experience when someone turns that corner of the street and then carries on. We are starting to build it imminently and it’s a few months of construction.”
