Dozens of people have been injured after a gas explosion ripped through a Washington DC suburb.At least 24 residents were injured by the fireball including some of the hundreds of firefighters who raced to the scene in Silver Spring. Dramatic images were posted to social media showing the area surrounding the blast covered in debris and dust.
One witness tweeted: “Just heard what sounded like an explosion that shook the house, then numerous police cars and fire trucks screamed by here in #SilverSpring.” Some reported hearing screaming from the building’s third floor following the blast.
Police have not confirmed if anyone died in the explosion , but ABC reporter Kevin Lewis said many on the scene had suffered “severe burns”.
More than 150 firefighters are battling the fire, which occurred on the border with Washington DC. Two were injured as the fought to rescue several residents trapped on the building’s fourth floor by the flames.
