The dust hasn’t even settled yet on Dame Barbara Windsor’s emotional EastEnders farewell and she already wants to come back – even though Peggy is dead…Many viewers are still traumatised from seeing the Queen Vic’s feistiest-ever landlady Peggy Mitchell die tragically in May – and then be laid to rest in July. But if you’d assumed that this massive send-off was really the end of Peggy Mitchell in Albert Square – think again!
“I would love Peggy to come back on as a ghost – I’d definitely be up for it. I’d love that as I’d have been able to have had a rest for a little bit,” she told The Sun at the TV Choice Awards.
“I’m going to have to talk to the producers so they can find a way of doing that. I’m still in touch with them all so it would be easy. When I went back for my last scenes I said, ‘I’ll get Grant back for you’, and of course he came back, didn’t he?” The idea isn’t too far-fetched since EastEnders actually brought back Peggy’s pal Pat Butcher (Pam St Clement) as a ghost for the Mitchell matriarch’s finale scenes.
Aside from the shock of seeing Peggy back on screen again, Dame Barbara is keen to mentor EastEnders’ young cast: “I want to go back to help those young actors – sometimes they need someone to really show them what to do,” she said. “In my day we were taught about respect and how to behave.”
