A non-league footballer has died after collapsing on the pitch during a game on Monday night.Shaw Lane AFC’s Daniel Wilkinson, 26, collapsed during the second half of a game against Brighouse Town in the Integro League Cup. He later died in hospital having suffered a suspected heart attack.
Wilkinson appeared to stop breathing and go into cardiac arrest during the second half. He was treated by paramedics for more than half an hour on the St Giles Road pitch where he was given CPR.
The defender, who signed for the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League team from Rushall Olympic in the summer, was then taken by ambulance to the Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax.
Shaw Lane chairman Craig Wood posted a statement on Facebook: “It’s with great sadness that we have to announce the tragic loss of Daniel Wilkinson who has sadly passed away after collapsing on the pitch during the game last night, our thoughts and prayers are with him family and friends at this time.”
