EastEnders star Adam Woodyatt has told of the horrifying moment his son was run over by a car – and left fighting for his life in a coma. The 18-year-old was flown to hospital by the Air Ambulance Service after being struck by a vehicle as he crossed a road in London on 29 September.
He underwent five hours of life-saving surgery “to put him back together” and spent weeks in a wheelchair before finally walking unaided on Friday. The accident has spurred on Adam, who plays Ian Beale in the BBC soap, to run next year’s London Marathon with Sam in aid of the Air Ambulance Service — which the pair had already planned to do before the accident.
Adam is a long-time ambassador for the service and has now written on his online JustGiving page: “We came up with the idea of him running it and me walking it, as a kind of tortoise and the hare, to show the difference in transfer times between an ambulance and an air ambulance.
“I got us two places for the London Marathon then this happened. The London Air Ambulance responded, treated him at roadside, put him into an induced coma and took him to the Royal London Hospital. But his recovery has been amazing and we are going to continue with the original plan.”
