A pregnant woman has been shot in the stomach by a gunman – killing her unborn twins.Lakira Renee Johnson was injured by the bullet as she walked out of a shop. The 21-year-old had been buying food from a takeaway in northeast Washington in the US at around 10pm on August 30 when the tragic incident occurred.
Police have described her as a bystander who was not directly targeted by the gunman. Another man was also shot and critically injured, according to reports.
Ms Johnson was rushed to the MedStar Washington Hospital Center where she gave birth to twins. Ms Johnson’s mother, Cassandra Johnson, 42, said the babies stayed alive long enough to be named – Heaven and Neveah (Heaven spelt backwards).
A hospital spokeswoman confirmed the death of the twins to the Washington Post but could not comment any further. On Monday, Ms Johnson underwent more surgery to repair the damage – an operation that could not be performed until after the twins had been born. Police are now investigating the shooting.
