As a child actress, Mara Wilson was best known for starring as Matilda , but the Hollywood starlet also appeared in favourites such as Mrs Doubtfire and Miracle On 34th Street. But Mara appeared to drop off the face of the earth for the longest time despite her incredible talent and popularity – apparently turning her back on Hollywood. But now, the 29-year-old is back and with a new book called Where Am I Now?. Over the years, Mara revealed that she’s seen many stories questioning her whereabouts.
“… You see a lot of things on the internet,” she explained. “You’ve seen a lot of it, sort of like, ‘Where is she now? Where did she disappear to?'” While she took on the lead role at the age of 10 in Matilda and Mara recalled how she quickly identified with the character.“I was so thrilled because that was a character that I loved, that I adored,” Wilson said of the 1996 movie. She was like the first girl character that I was just like, ‘She is so cool. That is who I want to be,’ and I did get to be her.” As they filmed Matilda, Mara’s mother sadly died of breast cancer and it was her co-star DeVito who made sure that her mother Suzie Wilson was able to see it before her death.
