A Russian Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jet has crashed outside Moscow, killing the pilot.Russia’s defence ministry said in a statement: “A jet of the Russian air force crashed as it was returning to its home aerodrome in the Moscow region after a planned flight. The pilot died.”
Reports suggest the jet was from the Russian Knights display team – the country’s equivalent of the Red Arrows – and ploughed into the ground some 35 kilometres (21 miles) northeast of the capital as it was flying in formation with five other planes.
The dead pilot has not been named officially, but unofficial reports say he is team member Sergei Yeryomenko. The plane crashed in a forest, sources said, adding no one on the ground had been injured.
