Three police officers have been confirmed dead after they were shot while on duty in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The city’s mayor, Kip Holden, said the officers had been responding to reports of gunfire when they were ambushed. One suspect has been killed, and police have confirmed they are looking for two other shooters after reviewing footage of the attack.
Authorities say a further three law enforcement officers are being treated in hospital. One of them is reported to be in a critical condition, while another is in a fair condition. A bomb disposal robot is checking to see whether the neutralised suspect was armed with explosives.
The shootings happened less than a mile from the city’s police headquarters. Several streets near the state capital’s police headquarters have been placed in lockdown.
“If you see anybody suspicious in nature – if they’re wearing army fatigues, if they’re wearing all black, if they’re wearing a mask – give us a call,” police spokesman L’Jean McKneely said.
