Disgraced cyclist Charlie Alliston has been jailed for 18 months after he killed a mum-of-two in a collision before blaming her. The former courier, then 18, knocked over and killed Briggs while riding an illegal Olympic-style racing bike for the “thrill”. Alliston was travelling at 18mph on the fixed-wheel track back with no front brakes before he crashed into the 44-year-old as she crossed Old Street in east London, in February last year.
Following the crash Alliston – previously described as “remorseless” – blamed Briggs. On social media he complained: “It’s not my fault people either think they are invincible or have zero respect for cyclists.” Following trial Alliston, now 20, was cleared on manslaughter but found guilty of causing bodily harm by “wanton and furious driving”. Old Bailey Judge Wendy Joseph DQ said today: “I am satisfied in some part it was this so-called thrill that motivated you to ride without a front brake shouting and swearing at pedestrians to get out of the way.
“I’ve heard your evidence and I have no doubt that even now you remain obstinately sure of yourself and your own abilities. I have no doubt you are wrong in this. You were an accident waiting to happen.” The judge added that the tragedy could have been avoided had the bike been fitted with a front wheel break.
