Reckless Russian forces have bombed a British Special Forces base – despite being warned not to.The base in southern Syria, which was also used by crack US troops, was blasted with Russian cluster bombs. American military chiefs then urgently called Russia’s air campaign headquarters to tell them the base shouldn’t be attacked.
But just 90 minutes later Putin’s warplanes struck again, with no pilots responding to US warnings issued over emergency frequencies. Four British Special Forces are believed to have been in the secret base at the time; as 20 had withdrawn the previous day.
And at least four NATO-backed rebel fighters were killed in the two airstrikes, according to the Wall Street Journal. The base, near the border with Jordan, is used by US and UK troops to launch operations deeper into Syria.
Russian officials initially pleaded that they believed it was an ISIS facility, but the Pentagon rejected the claims.
