Police say a mother handed over her two-year-old son to a homeless woman at a train station – and vanished.Officers have released a photo of the blond youngster in an attempt to identify and locate the woman, who apparently promised she would return but never did. Locals alerted police after she left her son, named Dima, in the care of a woman who lives at the railway station in the town of Noginsk, east of Moscow.
The homeless woman kept the child with her while begging, but locals grew concerned after seeing the boy following her around on the street. He has been taken into care by authorities after they failed to locate his family.
The unnamed homeless woman told Russian media: “She [the mother] came to me, and asked me to take care of her son. Then she ordered the boy to stay on the spot and went away quickly. She never came back. I think she was from Moscow.”
Police have released the boy’s photo hoping someone will recognise him and identify his mother. The boy reportedly has learning difficulties He does not speak and cries often. He was dressed in a clean jumper, pants and shoes and had a cough. After medical treatment he will be placed in an orphanage while police continue the search for his mother.
