A 16-year-old boy has died while playing in a river with friends in Hyde, Greater Manchester, as temperatures soared.The teenager had been swimming in the River Etherow, near Broadbottom Road, when he got into difficulties.
Officers were alerted to a body in the river just before 5.45pm on Tuesday – the hottest day of the year so far in the UK. Temperatures peaked at 33.5C (92.3F) at Brize Norton in Oxfordshire yesterday afternoon.
The force’s underwater search unit was deployed to the scene. Officers from Derbyshire Constabulary, firefighters and paramedics also attended. The boy’s body was found and recovered and no one else was taken to hospital.
Police said the water where the group were playing appeared calm and shallow, but may have masked hazards below.
