Five armed men stormed an upmarket restaurant in the popular Mexican resort of Puerto Vallarta – once frequented by Hollywood starlet Elizabeth Taylor. They grabbed 16 customers and bundled them into SUVs before speeding away at around 1am local time on Monday, local media reported. The motive for the attack is unclear.
“Seven or eight armed men stormed the restaurant and told the customers to lie on the ground. We don’t really know what happened after that,” said Puerto Vallarta’s Security Commissioner Jesus Jose Rodrigo Campoy.
Police are searching for four women who were in the targeted group – but not taken by the kidnappers, officials said. They believe that the victims are linked to criminal networks and were celebrating in the popular restaurant when they were snatched.
They had been holidaying at the resort for a week and detectives found drinks and luxury items left behind inside the restaurant. Authorities said they knew the identities of the assailants but refused to release them.
