The death of a popular soap’s most favourite characters has been announced.Neighbours actress Vivean Gray, who played Mrs Nell Mangel, has passed away at the age of 92. The British-born actress is most famous for her stint on the Australian soap as the meddling busybody who terrorised Ramsay Street from 1986 to 1988.
Australia’s Network Ten confirmed the sad news after rumours of her death started to circulate on Twitter. Head of Drama Rick Maier told Australia’s 9 News: ‘Mrs Mangel and Mrs Jessup were two of our most iconic characters from one our very best character actors.
‘Ramsay Street changed forever, and certainly no secret was ever safe, with Mrs Mangel on the lookout. Vivean’s contribution to Australian drama will never be forgotten. It is a very sad day for the Neighbours’ family.’ Mark Little, who played Gray’s on-screen son Joe Mangel, paid tribute to the actress describing her as a “legend many times over.”
Gray decided to quit acting after appearing on Neighbours after the abuse she received over the role. The actress, who also played Ida Jessops in The Sullivans and had roles in Prisoner, Power Without Glory and the film Picnic At Hanging Rock, moved to Sussex and never returned to acting.
