A war memorial in south east London was smashed to pieces this morning after a car crashed into it.The Kingswood Road memorial in Shortlands was reduced to rubble after the car ploughed into it and mounted the platform. Police and two fire engines attended the scene on Church Street at 10.25am.
A 20-year-old woman was taken to hospital but her injuries are not said to be life-threatening.
Sammy Selvage, who was working in the parallel road when the crash happened, told News Shopper: ‘It’s a junction which the memorial splits into two sides so they must have launched into it and over.’
The road remained shut for just under an hour while officers investigated but it later reopened. The memorial commemorated local men and women who died fighting in World War I and II.
